Marigolds are easy to grow from seed, add color to the kitchen garden, help repel pests, make excellent cut flowers, and some varieties are edible. Signet marigolds (Tagetes tenuifolia ) produce tiny, colorful, fragrant and edible flowers over lacy, fragrant foliage. The plants grow about a foot (30 cm) high, so make an excellent edger for the kitchen garden. ‘Lemon Gem’ and ‘Tangerine Gem’ each bear the fragrance and color of their names. ‘Starfire’ is a range of orange and yellow. There is also a red variety, ‘Red Gem’. Mexican mint marigold (Tagetes lucida ) has tiny bright yellow flowers and aromatic leaves. It’s also edible. French marigolds (Tagetes patula ) have been effective at controlling nematodes in the soil.
